October 7, 2024 — The Society for Clinical Research Sites (SCRS) is proud to announce Avera Research Institute (ARI) as the recipient of the 2024 Site Excellence in Patient Inclusion Award. Sponsored by Syneos Health, this prestigious award recognizes Avera’s outstanding commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in clinical research.
Located in South Dakota, ARI has implemented innovative strategies to increase participation from historically underrepresented groups, particularly rural communities and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations. With research offices near tribal reservations and mobile research units equipped for remote study participation, they have enrolled over 400 AI/AN participants in their studies, demonstrating immense dedication to overcoming barriers like geographic isolation and mistrust in clinical research.
Community engagement is another standout aspect of ARI’s efforts. Through regular involvement in local health fairs and cultural events, and with guidance from a robust Community Advisory Board, ARI tailors its outreach efforts to meet the unique needs of diverse populations. The organization also provides free transportation to study participants, ensuring accessibility and fostering inclusion in clinical trials.
Jyoti Angal, PhD, Director of Clinical Research at Avera Research Institute shared, “Avera Research Institute is honored to receive the 2024 Site Excellence in Patient Inclusion Award from Syneos Health and be recognized for our longstanding commitment to enhancing diversity in clinical research by reducing barriers to participation for rural and underserved communities. We are grateful to our community partners for their contribution to the development of innovative participant engagement strategies to promote inclusivity in research.”
Jackie Kent, SCRS Vice President of Diversity & Special Projects, remarked, “Avera Research Institute’s initiatives stand as a model of what it means to truly engage underrepresented communities in research. Their use of mobile research units and culturally sensitive approaches has helped bridge the gap between rural populations and clinical trials. SCRS celebrates Avera’s dedication to enhancing inclusive, equitable, and accessible clinical trials.”
The Site Excellence in Patient Inclusion Award is open to SCRS site members globally and recognizes innovative initiatives designed to engage diverse and underserved communities. The award honors sites that implement culturally tailored outreach, community partnerships, educational programs, and recruitment strategies that prioritize diversity and inclusion. The 2024 finalists included Avera Research Institute, FutureMeds, and Velocity Clinical Research.
