Helping Research Sites Navigate Emerging Trial Technologies

The SCRS Digital Innovation Initiative (DII) empowers clinical research sites by addressing the demand for education and training on decentralized clinical trials (DCTs) and other emerging clinical technologies.

Through collaboration with industry partners, the initiative shares best practices, tools, and insights that help sites reduce operational burden, improve technology implementation, and remain active participants in the digital evolution of clinical research.

Closing the Technology Gap: Why DII Exists

Sites are being asked to adopt new technology faster than most operating budgets or staffing models can absorb it. Integration issues, training gaps, financial strain, and “bring-your-own-tech” risk all slow adoption and create friction between sites and their sponsor and CRO partners.

When DII launched in 2019, roughly 90% of respondents to SCRS surveys indicated a need for additional training and knowledge around decentralized clinical trials. DII was built to close that demonstrated gap through collaboration with industry partners, sharing best practices, tools, and insights that help sites reduce operational burden, improve technology implementation, and remain active participants in the digital evolution of clinical research.

Program Goals

1

Equip sites to adopt emerging technology with confidence & compliance.

2

Align sites and industry around a shared standard of technological readiness.

3

Strengthen long-term sustainability of the site community through adoption.

Digital Best Practices & Resources for Sites

Decentralized Trials

A readiness guide for sites considering hybrid decentralized trials. Covers capability gaps, common concerns, and how to choose the right approach for your site.

Connected Devices

Guidance for understanding and using connected devices in clinical trials. Learn how a more integrated approach can improve the experience for both sites and patients.

Cybersecurity Guide

Clinical technology comes with cybersecurity risks. This guide covers what a breach could mean for your site, how to respond, prevention strategies, and what it might cost.

Site Tech Implementation Checklist

Technology only works when your processes do. Use this checklist to prepare for a successful tech rollout, covering planning, stakeholder engagement, training, compliance, and follow-up.

AI Quick Start Guide

A practical two-page reference guide covering AI basics, guardrails, prompting tips, and ready-to-use prompts tailored specifically for clinical research site teams.

AI Guidance Framework

AI is already reshaping site operations, from patient identification and documentation to data entry and communication. Yet sites have had no independent, site-specific guidance to inform their adoption decisions. The SCRS AI Guidance Framework is designed to close that gap.

Built by a working group of site professionals from the realities of day-to-day trial operations, the framework will give sites a practical foundation for adopting AI safely and effectively, on their own terms. It will also give sponsors and CROs a credible benchmark for what good looks like at the site level.

Cut25

Excessive training requirements slow down study start-up, increase site burden, and create inefficiencies. Through strategic collaboration, data-driven decision-making, and industry commitment, Cut25 drives meaningful reductions in training time without compromising compliance or quality.

SCRS is calling on pharmaceutical companies, CROs, and technology partners to right-size site training by eliminating unnecessary, redundant, and inefficient training requirements. This initiative aims to improve operational efficiency while maintaining high-quality education for clinical research professionals.
