FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ellicott City, MD, May 12, 2017 – The Society for Clinical Research Sites (SCRS) and Clinical Ink have released a white paper titled, “Why Is Clinical Source Data Still Collected on Paper?” Building on data from the Research Site Source Survey of 650 global research sites, it calculates the total cost of paper source documents and manual transcription.
With the widespread adoption of EMR and EDC solutions, it is easy to assume that the industry has streamlined the process of collecting study data. The surprising reality is 90% of sites are still collecting trial data on paper.
“We found that creating paper source documents is a significant site expense,” said Christine Pierre, president of SCRS. “Electronic medical record adoption and eSource regulation have brought the promise of eliminating this expense. In this paper, we explore the current landscape and potential savings and quality improvement of increased use of eSource.”
“Reducing the burden on clinical sites while improving protocol execution and data quality for sponsors has been our core focus since the company’s inception, said Doug Pierce, President Clinical Ink. As the pioneer in protocol driven eSource solutions, we recognized early on that EDC and EMR cannot deliver these improvements. The survey and white paper highlight the time and cost associated with the paper process today and a path forward.”
