October 12, 2022 – Today the Society for Clinical Research Sites (SCRS) is pleased to announce the winner of the 2022 Excellence in Patient Centricity award, DM Clinical Research. The award, sponsored by Sanofi, was created to celebrate a clinical research site that places patient experience at the center of its operations. DM Clinical Research won this year’s award by adopting patient-centricity as a measurable and strategic goal for its organization. They started by analyzing their patients’ journeys by communicating directly with trial participants, where they discovered redundancies, confusion and discontinuities in communication. Their team streamlined communication channels and made an effort to tailor to individual patients’ preferred mode (text, email, phone) and time to be contacted, and increased coverage hours to accommodate these preferences. Additionally, they launched a Patient Advocates training program which ensured dedicated personnel at each site solely focused on patient satisfaction. This role included greeting patients, offering regular updates on wait times, and ensuring patient comfort. A patient survey was instituted that allowed their organization to establish a baseline, benchmark between sites and study teams, track progress over time, and continually solicit areas of improvement. SCRS Global Impact Partners (GIPs) and sites cast their nominations for the award, which was eligible to any active SCRS member site. Through an independent judging panel, the winner was selected to receive the award at the SCRS Eagle Award Gala held during the SCRS Global Site Solutions Summit on Saturday, October 8, 2022. “At DM Clinical Research our belief has always been to create systems and processes that are patient-centric and ensure that our core values are not just talked about but operationalized through measurable outcomes,” said Hera Arham, Director of Marketing and Patient Engagement at DM Clinical Research. “We’re incredibly grateful to have won this coveted award and are thankful to our staff, investigators, and most importantly our patients who have contributed to the development of a patient-centric culture through impactful feedback, reliable data, and metrics. We strive to keep patient-centricity at the forefront of all we do.” “Putting patients first is something many industry organizations strive to do but can be challenging to implement. However, we saw many sites this year that went above and beyond to make clinical trials more accessible and convenient for their trial participants,” added Jimmy Bechtel, SCRS VP of Site Engagement. “SCRS applauds DM Clinical Research for their industry-leading initiatives that have improved the patient journey from start to finish. We are honored to help amplify the outstanding work they have done in providing a blueprint for successful patient-centric processes.” For more information about the Excellence in Patient Centricity Award and the SCRS Global Site Solutions Summit, visit sitesolutionssummit.com. Hanover, MD, July 7, 2022 – The Society for Clinical Research Sites (SCRS) has issued a response to the new required form issued on July 1, 2022 by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) which impacts how routine care covered by Medicaid in qualifying clinical trials should be billed by clinical research sites and healthcare providers. This form is a new requirement under a recently passed federal law (Section 210 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021) that requires all states’ Medicaid programs to cover such services. SCRS and industry stakeholders have expressed that the addition of this required form may decrease clinical trial enrollment of Medicaid beneficiaries and will subsequently impact opportunities for increased diversity, equity and inclusion of trials. Additionally, the form will increase research site costs due to the extra work needed to complete the form as well as compliance risk and tracking. SCRS has already successfully worked with CMS to develop a more streamlined form compared to the original draft issued 6 months ago. The discussions resulted in having the scope clarified as well as simplifying the process to complete the form. More information about SCRS’ accepted revisions, as well as helpful information for industry partners regarding the form, can be found on the SCRS website. “SCRS was pleased that CMS listened to the voice of the sites and made major revisions to the final form,” commented David Vulcano, SCRS Honorary President. “However, concerns still remain that the legal requirement of this form will increase clinical research site costs and decrease enrollment of Medicaid beneficiaries in clinical trials. We are keenly interested in hearing the site experience with this issue and evidence of its impact, both positive and negative.” As Medicaid is a state-run program, it is critical for clinical trial sites and affiliated providers that expect to bill Medicaid for routine care in qualifying trials to receive guidance from state Medicaid programs on when and how they expect the form to be utilized and archived. SCRS is continuing to educate Congress on this issue and has requested sites share their experience with its implementation. To share comments, please contact communications@myscrs.org. Hanover, MD, May 4, 2022 – The Society for Clinical Research Sites (SCRS) today announced the release of a toolkit created by several of its largest site network members to address the clinical research industry’s workforce challenges and inflationary pressures. The Site Toolkit for Challenges in Workforce Retention and Inflation is available to SCRS member sites and offers best practices to maximize revenue, minimize costs, and recruit and retain employees. A companion deliverable to the toolkit is an open letter to industry Sponsors and CROs, outlining current challenges sites face with staffing and budgeting, and solutions urgently needed to address those issues. “The goal of these tools is to encourage an honest dialogue about the industry’s shared responsibility to each other during this especially challenging time,” said Allyson Small, Chief Operating Officer of SCRS. “It’s imperative that we address these issues now to ensure we have a viable research infrastructure required to continue to conduct safe and effective clinical trials at scale, whether traditional or hybrid.” William Smith, CEO of Alliance for Multispecialty Research and SCRS Task Force Committee co-chair added, “Sites are increasingly challenged by both inflation and the even more accelerated costs of healthcare workers. The data and best practices SCRS has collected through this Task Force Committee will be instrumental to help sites and industry work together to reach mutually-beneficial solutions.” “While SCRS members are working with each other in sharing best practices to address these headwinds, even our most experienced site leaders state they cannot pull through this alone,” commented David Vulcano, Honorary President of SCRS. “They need help from sponsors, CROs, and other stakeholders involved in clinical trials and the progress of new therapies.” SCRS encourages all sites and industry partners to share the letter with their respective organizations and networks. SCRS will continue to host meaningful discussions between industry sponsors, CROs, solution providers, and sites through webinars, Site Solutions Summit sessions, and Sites NOW meetings. Diana Foster, VP of Strategy and Special Projects for SCRS commented, “The PPD clinical research business has been a valued contributor to SCRS for several years and has consistently demonstrated their commitment to site sustainability. Their engagement in this program will directly support ongoing research that will aid sites in recruiting and engaging diverse patients. SCRS looks forward to collaborating with them to address this industry-wide need.” “It’s vital that clinical trials include participation by patients representing the diversity of the overall population to ensure the efficacy and effectiveness of promising new treatments for all people,” said David M. Johnston, Ph.D., Senior Vice President and President, Clinical Research, Thermo Fisher Scientific. “Through our collaboration with SCRS, we are able to exchange best practices and hear the ‘voice of the site’ to continually improve trial conduct strategy and execution on behalf of customers and for patients in need.” Last year, the PPD clinical research business was named the winner of SCRS’ prestigious Eagle Award for its commitment to advancing clinical research professionalism through strong site partnerships. The award, based on voting by research sites globally, recognizes the clinical research organization that best exemplifies a site-focused approach to clinical trial management by demonstrating outstanding leadership, professionalism and integrity. ### About The Society for Clinical Research SitesFounded in 2012, SCRS is a global organization that unifies the voice of the clinical research site community to create greater site sustainability.
